Detroit Day 20: A Sunny Saturday
Summer in Detroit is definitely the best time of year and there are way more activities than hours in a day so I have to pick and choose very carefully!
First Stop: Personal Trainer Session
I am still focused on slimming my body down before I start hitting the beaches, so even though it is painful waking up early three times per week, I am committed to getting my body back in shape!
I think he is more serious about this than i am. |
Second Stop: Eastern Market and Detroit Mercantile Company
Bert’s on Broadway |
Every Saturday since I have started the #30daysinDetroit I have spent Saturday morning at Eastern Market and will continue to do so. I just love the energy of the market and the mixed crowd. Some people are there to do there weekly shopping while others use it as a backdrop to socialize with friends and family or merely as a people watching location.
I first met up with two friends and we walked around the market. Since I hadn’t eaten anything, I opted for the Mac Shack food truck since I had been trying to taste this mac and cheese for two weeks. Since I am not really eating meat right now, I went with the Papa Smurf (mac and cheese topped with mushrooms and caramelized onions), which was absolutely delicious. And I consider myself a mac and cheese connoisseur so trust me on this one.
Since it was very very hot outside, we walked over to Burt’s on Broadway
and listened to music with some ice cold refreshing drinks. If you stop
by, even without plans to sit down, you MUST try the fresh squeezed
lemonade and the freshly prepared BBQ. I am still dreaming about it.
DELICIOUS! |
The next stop was the Detroit Mercantile Company which was having a
midsummer market featuring several small vendors from the area,
including jewelry makers, screen printers and even a barber. This was my
first time in the store and I absolutely loved it. I met two awesome
women, Maria and Molly, at the screen printing table. I must publicly
thank Maria again for helping me with my wardrobe malfunction and thanks
to Molly for connecting me with a friend of hers.
Even
though the midsummer market was only for this past weekend I definitely
encourage a trip to the Detroit Mercantile Company where you can get a
lot of Detroit and Michigan made goodies as well as other items which
are made in the USA.

Third Stop: Detroit City Football (also known as soccer) Club
My friends Maurice and Chioke, who introduced me to the Detroit City Futbol League invited me to the Detroit City FC regional semi finals which were held at Cass Tech. I was warned that the fans can get a bit crazy, but I had no idea. Some of the chants were laced with cursed words and the taunting of the Ohio team was endless. I was involved in a “tetris” chant which is hard to describe but perhaps can be youtubed. Once the team scored, smoke bombs were plentiful causing some fans to retreat from the stands. I only stayed for 30 minutes, but that was enough time for someone that isn’t much of a football fan. The atmosphere was amazing and watching football with the Detroit skyline in the backdrop was amazing. I highly recommend a trip to an FC game.
Fourth Stop: The Natural Market
Victoria, the owner of the Natural Market had a Sip and Sample event to unveil the updating of her store and the expansion of her product line. Unfortunately I only have one picture from the event, but I encourage you to check her out. I previously wrote about the shop a while back.
