Escape from Rome: Sperlonga
Back in June, we had a Thursday off to celebrate a national holiday and while most people took off Friday and headed to faraway places, three friends and I opted for a day trip outside of Rome. So we met up at Termini station, a little to close to the time the first train was departing and of course after some confusion, we managed to miss the train and had to wait two hours for next one.
Two hours later, we hopped on the train and headed to Fondi Sperlonga, where we would catch a bus to the beach. Many colleagues at work have been to Sperlonga and rave about it, so when we hopped off the bus, I must say I was quite underwhelmed. We later found out that because none of us did our homework, we actually hopped off of the bus a bit too early, but we made the best of it and had an amazing day.
We had a picnic, listened to good music, enjoyed swimming and of course the pending sunset.
On our way back to the Rome we missed the once an hour bus by about 30 seconds. If we waited for the next bus we would’ve missed our train so we decided to hitchhike. After three minutes, we were on our way to the station in a minivan with no seats.
So if you are looking for a quick beach trip outside of Rome, do head down to Sperlonga, but make sure you do your homework and get off at the right beach!
