Eating NYC: Nook
I spent the last nine days in NYC, a place that feels like home. I spent my undergraduate years there and visit every single time that I am in the US. Surprisingly I have been in and out of the US for the last three and a half months and I just now made it to NYC, save for stopovers pre and post Buenos Aires in January and February respectively.
New York is well-known for its restaurants, serving as home to cuisines from around the globe. While I have my staple favorites, Spice (Thai) and Pio Pio (Peruvian), this was one of the first trips where I visited loads of new restaurants and fell in love.
One of my favorite restaurants from this trip is Nook. Nook is a super cute restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen which came recommended to me by a close friend who is friend’s with the owners. She raved about the food and when she told me it was BYOB I knew I had to try it.
I went with my friend Crystal who just started a new job and we went to celebrate. So we called and made reservations. We were running a bit behind because we needed to stop off and grab our bottle of wine. When we called to update on our ETA he was super kind and told us not to worry. When we arrived at 746 9th Avenue, it was clear to me where the restaurant got its name. This place is TINY. The inside is not super fancy but the BYOB and close quarters make for a fun experience. We interacted with our neighboring tables and completely fell in love with the host/waiter/server, who was three in one.
Crystal ordered the salmon and I ordered the tuscan chicken. The chicken was good not great, but she loved her salmon. I highly recommend the rosemary french fries. There was more to taste but my belly wouldn’t allow. We stayed about 45 minutes after we finished our food and never were pressured to leave. We chatted with the host and learned more about the history of the restaurant and the menu offerings. So if I didn’t love the food why am I recommending it? I heard that other items on the menu are to die for, but more importantly you cannot beat the atmosphere. It is very laid back and if you gather twenty of your friends you can have the place to yourself and bring along your alcohol, mixers and shaker!
The restaurant is cash only so be sure to stop by the ATM when you stop at the liquor store!
