The Natural Hair Market – Detroit
Being natural, in black girl speak means not relaxing your hair with “creamy crack” or wearing weaves and wigs. This seems to be an emerging trend in the US among black women. More and more we are seeing a celebration of our hair in its natural state and large multinationals are also getting on board. Carol’s Daughter, a small natural product shop that started in Brooklyn has spiraled to the national stage and is now sold in Sephora and Macy’s. At your local Target you can find Miss Jessie products on the end cap. Products for natural girls are everywhere.
While I was in Detroit, I headed down to DSE, a shop which sells their own branded clothing. As the owner was not there, I popped into the store next door, which was the beautiful smelling The Natural Hair Market. A beautiful and simple shop which sells hair products for natural hair as well as organic soaps, candles, lip balms and other delicious smelling things. The owner, Victoria Roby, who is only 25, is a sweetheart and a welcome face when you walk in. Because it is Detroit, we realized very quickly that we had friends in common, though we had never met.
She is very proud of her store, and should be. She carries anything that a natural girl would need and loads of things that people who aren’t natural would love to have in their house. And she adds very cute touches to all of the purchase. I spent a mere $1.05 and I received a handwritten thank you card inside of the simple yet lovely brown bag. So if you are downtown, head over to The Natural Hair Market, and tell Victoria that I sent you!
