Detroit Day 25: Heat wave, 13 miles and a few pictures
This week the heat index has been in the triple digits and since I do not have a car that means a lot of sweat and sunscreen. I have slowed down recently with my exploration of the city and because of some torrential downpour I had to take time to repair my basket. So I didn’t do much today, but it was a fun day and I biked 13.4 miles in the heat! :-O
First Stop: John K. King Books
I cannot believe that in all of my time in Detroit, more than 21 years, I never made it to the John K. King Used bookstore. I have seen it thousands of times and always promised myself that I would go inside but never did. I finally committed to going and I am glad I did. The store was opened in 1965 and brought me back to my NYC days of hanging out in used bookstores during undergrad. The store boasts over one million books and also has a rare book collection. If you are in the book scavenger mode definitely head over to John K. Kings and find some treasures.

Second Stop: Before I Die….wall
On our way to an event, some friends and I stopped at the “Before I Die” wall in Eastern Market. Before I Die is a global art project that invites people to
reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public
space. This project was started by Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans after she lost someone she loved. Learn more here.
I wrote: …write a novel and …love again.
Wow I haven't been to that book store or Eastern Market since I was a kid. Glad to see both places are still doing good.
Yup. And Eastern Market is better than ever!!
