Spirit Airlines’ $9 Fare Club

I’m sure you’ve all seen the advertisements for airfare on Spirit Airlines as low as $9, sometimes as low as $.01. For all of you skeptics, I’m here to tell you it’s the real deal. I’m currently sitting on a Spirit flight headed to NYC. Everyone often asks me how I am able to afford so much travel, well Spirit’s $9 fare club allows me to do most of my domestic travel for a very low price. How low is low you ask? I’ve flown between DTW (Detroit) and LGA (New York’s LaGuardia) for $34. Heck I flew to FLL (Fort Lauderdale) from DTW for $30 to celebrate my 25th birthday. And yes, both of these prices are after taxes and whatever other bs we pay for, besides the actual airfare. The cost of signing up is $39.95 per year and I’ve definitely already saved that, many times over.

With everything, there are always drawbacks. The primary drawback of the $9 fare club is that most of the super low fares are for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Sometimes you can get lucky and find some weekend flights, but it is rare. A friend and I are heading to Miami for a weekend getaway in June and got tickets for $120 for a Friday-Monday between LGA and FLL. Flights on other airlines for the same time were running about $200. Another key to utilizing the fare club is having the flexibility to get up and leave within two weeks notice. Many of the deals have very specific dates and sometimes the dates are right around the corner. Finally the best way to utilize the fare club is to have a travel buddy as spontaneous as you or to have friends all over the states that you can visit. My travel buddy is my friend Elton also known as @L10. He called me in Japan one day and asked if I wanted to go to Columbia or Honduras for his birthday, I chose Honduras and 10 minutes later we both had our flight confirmation in our inbox. So the moral of this post is, after reading this, head over to www.spiritair.com and sign up for the fare club and the emails. As soon as that email pops in your inbox, book a ticket.
