25 Years of Life

Last night I had the first celebration of many, in honor of my 25th year of life! While I was in Fiji last week, I realized that my birthday was approaching much sooner than I realized and I hadn’t yet planned anything in Detroit. So I came up with the theme of Cupcakes and Candy as an ode to childhood. The color scheme was hot pink, white and brown. For everyone that came to the party, they received cupcakes, goodie bags, and ring pops which were to adorn their fingers all night long. Some people ate theirs before the night was over and one person begged me to make a store run to find more.

The event was held at the Bosco in Ferndale, Michigan which is a charming little bar not frequented by many people. Unfortunately, there was a bit of drama during my celebration. I called The Bosco last week to inquire about a private event and it would have cost me $1500 to rent plus a guarantee of $1500 at the bar. Since I had been to the Bosco on several Wednesdays, I knew this would be foolish, in that I do not think on their best Wednesday they have ever made $3000. So I decided not to rent it out and just have my friends come as if they were regular patrons. I was told that my cupcakes had to be put away by 10pm so that other patrons didn’t think that it was a private event. When 10:30 rolled around, we were being told to remove the cupcakes even though out of the 25 or so people there, only two were not with my party and in fact, I gave the two people cupcakes.

While I understood that they set the rule upfront, it seemed unnecessary to enforce it because the vast majority of patrons were with me. I talked to the manager who said it wasn’t his call. He tried to be helpful, but there was someone named Jeremy who was causing the problem. I was told he was the owner, come to find out he is the owner’s brother. So I went outside to talk to him and he told me he didn’t want to have the conversation about the cupcakes and that we couldn’t have food. I explained we only had seven more cupcakes to get rid of and also that out of the 60 some odd people inside only seven weren’t my friends and that if its that big of a deal we could leave. He said to leave if that’s what I wanted to do. At this point, I decided we would leave. I go back inside and begin to round up my friends. I didn’t care if there was nowhere else to go or if we were going to stand on Woodward all night, I could not give money to this establishment after they treated me like this. Marissa, my dear sweet friend, who is a much nicer person than me, calmed me down, talked to the manager, distributed cupcakes and all was well.

Besides that slight blip, I had such an amazing time. So many people came out and I was surprised to see a few of them. I saw some people that I hadn’t seen since high school and of course close friends and family made the evening perfect.
